Yalçın, attended the International Conference on “Food Justice From a Human Rights Perspective: Challenges of Reality and Future Stakes” held in Qatar
Memur-Sen President Ali Yalçın and Memur-Sen Vice President, as well as Toç Bir-Sen President Hüseyin Öztürk attended the conference at the conference titled “Food Justice from a Human Rights Perspective: Realities and Challenges of the Future”, organized by the Qatar National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) in care of Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, on February 6-7.
Speaking on food security and food supply, Yalçın stated, “Today, while one part of the world is combating obesity, another part is losing lives due to inadequate nutrition. While horrendous food waste is occurring in one part of the world, another part either cannot access food or is forced to consume food lacking safety. Wars, hunger, poverty, and great tragedies are occurring in many countries around the world.”
"Global system is producing inequality"
Emphasizing that the root cause of the problems lies in the inequalities generated by the existing global system, Yalçın highlighted that the poor are not the source of inequality but they are the ones who pay the price. He stated, "The poor are paying the price of the climate crisis, the poor are paying the price of water scarcity, the poor are paying the price of wars. While conflicts are happening in one part of the world, on the other hand, the entire world is struggling with global inflation. According to the predictions of the ILO, global unemployment will become even more acute in the coming period. We cannot talk about food security in a place where there is inequality in wealth distribution. In an economic order where capital is monopolized, rents are exacerbated, and global capital is in the hands of the elite 1%, we cannot talk about food justice. Because inequality in wealth distribution further complicates the access to food for vulnerable groups and the poor during times of crisis."
Bringing up the genocide perpetrated by Zionist Israel in Gaza to the agenda of the meeting, Yalçın stated, "We see that international organizations do not act in accordance with their founding values regardless of language, religion, or race in ensuring Food Justice. We saw the closest example in Gaza. Even before October 7th, Gaza was an open-air prison for 16 years. Neither enough medicine nor enough food was allowed to enter the city."
Ali Yalçın, the President of Memur-Sen, also visited the Turkish Embassy in Qatar and held a meeting with Ambassador Dr. M. Mustafa Göksu.
Furthermore, Yalçın visited the Qatar Turkish School, where he met with school administrators and educators, engaging in a discussion on education for a while.
