"The fight against violence and harassment against women is doomed to failure if the world of work is not at the center of the mobilization."
30.11.21, Tuesday
On the occasion of the Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Memur-Sen Commission for the Status of Women issued a statement signed by its president, Sıdıka Aydın.
Violence, with the destruction and trauma it causes, unfortunately continues to wreak havoc mostly on the lives of vulnerable groups of people.
One of the important pillars of the global fight against violence against women is the coherence of actions on a global scale. For, in an environment where we talk about combating violence against women, it would be wrong not to address wars, immigration policies, economic indicators and inequities in global income distribution. Vulnerable groups of people are the most likely to be exposed to violence, as they are proportionally more affected economically.
For example, over 60 million asylum seekers/refugees worldwide live in extremely difficult conditions, and it is these women and children who are most affected by violence. In this context, a global and coherent discourse must become an absolute priority.
Nevertheless, working life is one of the main areas in which violence is practiced, and it is therefore essential to take the necessary legal measures to protect workers.
The definition of violence must include all possible forms of violence, physical, psychological and economic aggression.
On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we, the Memur-Sen Commission for the Status of Women, recommend the implementation of strong mechanisms of social dialogue with the aim of strengthening the legal regulations to eradicate violence against women in the workplace
