Speaking on the occasion of the 7th Ordinary General Assembly of the Transport Union (Ulaştırma Memur-Sen) held in Ankara on January 19, Ali Yalçın, president of Memur-Sen, pointed to the inadequacy of salary increases for public employees whose purchasing power and living standards continue to deteriorate.
Stressing that trade unionism requires to be a central component of regulation against the employer, Yalçın reminded once again that, "The trade union struggle is to ensure the collective and individual defense of the interests of employees."
Drawing attention to the unprecedented decline in the purchasing power of public employees, Yalçın said, "We believe that the economic analyses presented by the public employer neglect the negative impact of the decline in the purchasing power of employees."
Furthermore, Yalçın stated, "It is in this sense that we should not "waste" the opportunity given by this crisis; it should allow us to build the foundations of a stronger economy and more sustainable growth."
Adding that, "We are certain that the only way to revive the economy is to increase resilience, draw the consequences of our dependence in certain sectors, invest in the sectors of the future, address the fragilities of our productive system and accelerate the energy transition."
In this situation, the recovery policy to be implemented should be based on an analysis of the situation, the needs of businesses and households, but also in a more forward-looking way on the lessons to be learned from this crisis, and the means to accelerate the necessary changes in the Turkish economy to make it more prosperous, more sustainable and more competitive. he concluded.
