38th meeting of the EU-Turkey Joint Consultative Committee held in Brussels, Belgium

The 38th EU-Turkey Joint Consultative Committee met in Brussels on 8 and 9 April 2019 to work on a wide range of issues including the latest situation on EU-Turkey relations, civil society organisations, the custom union and visa dialogue.
The EU-Turkey Joint Consultative Committee brought together 14 members of the European Economic and Social Council (EESC) and 26 members of organized civil society in Turkey, including Confederation of Public Servants Trade Unions (Memur-Sen), the confederation of workers' unions (Hak-İş), the confederation of employers' associations of Turkey (TİSK), the confederation of Turkish workers' unions (Turk- İş), the confederation of public sector workers unions in Turkey (Kamu- Sen), the Confederation of Chambers of Traders and Craftsmen of Turkey (TESK) and the Union of Chambers of Commerce and Stock Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB).
On relations between the EU and Turkey, CCM members welcomed Turkey's ongoing efforts on the issue of migration, saying the challenge of migration in the Eastern Mediterranean should be jointly tackled by the EU and Turkey.
On the state of the economy in Turkey, the JCC welcomes the European Commission's proposal to modernize the Customs Union Agreement, but recalls the need for the agreement to have a chapter on sustainable development labor, social and environmental standards.
On social issues and employment in Turkey, the JCC stressed that other measures and policies should be implemented to promote basic labor rights and decent working conditions, in keeping with the fundamental Conventions of the ILO. The importance of facilitating the transition from the informal economy to the formal economy was also emphasized.
