17.06.21, Thursday
The report on the disproportionate examination fees as requested by the ÖSYM (Student Selection and Placement System) was made public at a press conference organized by the Memur-Sen Youth Committee on Wednesday.
The report entitled "Disproportionate examination fees as requested by the ÖSYM", including a series of recommendations and suggestions, questions the increase in examination fees by the authorities in charge of the student selection and placement system.
Speaking at the press conference, Memur-Sen Youth Commission (Genç Memur-Sen) Chairman Mustafa Başkara; said, "Education is a fundamental and essential right guaranteed by the Constitution. The decision to increase the already high examination fees are an obstacle to access to education and training.", adding that, "8 to 14 million applicants among undergraduate and graduate students participate in examinations every year, it is incumbent on the authorities to take responsible measures to ensure and promote equal opportunities to education. ", he said.
Noting that the increase in examination fees was outrageously disconnected from reality, Başkara said, "The increase in examination fees for state civil service examinations are disproportionated and even more so, totally disconnected from the main indicators of economic conditions such as the consumer price index. ", he underligned.
According to the report prepared by the Memur-Sen Youth Commission, in relation to the evolution of the consumer price index since 2006, the current registration fee for the State Civil Service examination is more than three times higher than what it should be.
Another important conclusion of the report concerns the registration fees for the State Civil Service examinations which are not, in principle, calculated according to the costs incurred by the State for this purpose. On the other hand, Genç Memur-Sen President Başkara said, "The fact that the registration fees related to the student selection and placement system are calculated according to the costs is not in line with the right to equal opportunities in education, nor the social model promoted and defended by our country. ", he stressed.
