The vice-president of the Memur-Sen confederation, Mr. Mehmet Emin Esen, participated in the video conference organized by the Organization of African Trade Union Unity on the subject: "The Coronavirus Pandemic and Its Socio-Economic Impact on Workers in Africa: The Role of Trade Unions" organized by the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU).
The video conference organized by the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) brought together trade union representatives from different countries including the African continent to discuss the repercussions and measures to be taken in response to Covid-19.
The vice-president of the Memur-Sen Confederation, Mr. Mehmet Emin Esen, began by thanking OATUU for organizing this video conference and then continued his speech: “Some people put Covid-19 at the center of the crisis and, at one point, conceals actual news. The pandemic is not the cause of the crisis. This only made the crisis worse. The world system was already going through an economic crisis. Since 2008, the crisis has continued to deepen day by day. The financial bubble has burst and most of humanity has been affected by this crisis. In addition, a large majority of the world's population faces poverty.
As trade union organizations, we must further increase our solidarity. In times of crisis, and in all circumstances, trade unions must develop strategic responses, focused on decent work for a fair and lasting recovery,” he said.
“Protecting workers and their families from the risk of infection must be absolute property. It is fundamental to give priority to social dialogue”, then added: “Tripartite social dialogue between governments and workers 'and employers' organizations is an essential tool for developing and implementing sustainable solutions on a global scale."
